the same agent, just after it connects, tries to connect again. here is a snippet from the partition event history.

this was at the time (I think) when our servers were in a bad state due to the database connection problems. I have a feeling the agent's sender was going up and down at this time. I'll need to see the agent logs - but, since this is agent spawn, the log files probably won't help because by default only ERROR and FATAL levels are enabled. If we can replicate this, we'll need to turn up the log so we can see what is triggering this (i.e. I'd like to see if the sender object is getting turned on and off)

I think this is a red herring. This agent was one running on my windows laptop and the VM it was running in got an OutOfMemoryError. This VM and therefore all of its agents were hosed due to this.
